How to Get a Pilot’s License: What You Need to Know

  • by

Getting a pilot’s license can open up freedom and opportunities. For those aiming to become a professional pilot, a pilot’s license is necessary. Here, learn how to get a pilot’s license to become a professional pilot. This blog explores valuable information about getting a pilot’s license.

Types of Pilot’s License

Getting a pilot’s license is an easy and simple process, but you will decide which type of pilot you want to become before entering the aviation industry. Pilot’s licenses fall into four types. Here are some types of pilot licenses that you should consider.

Sport Pilot License (SPL)

Sport Pilot License (SPL) is a type of pilot’s license for those who don’t want to spend much money. Getting an SPL license is easier than other types of pilot licenses. It has minimum requirements, which means you don’t need to spend much time in the air. It doesn’t require learning to fly at night. In addition, there is no need to take a medical exam to obtain a valid pilot’s license. However, pilots with SPL licenses can fly two-seat, light sport aircraft only.

Recreational Pilot Certificate

Recreational Pilot Certificate is an ideal choice for those who want to fly bigger aircraft than a sport pilot license. However, it is a certificate only – not an additional pilot’s license. You will get this certificate alone or with your SPL license.

Recreational Pilot Certificate has fewer requirements compared to the SPL license. However, there are a few restrictions, such as that you can carry one passenger in a single-engine aircraft, and you don’t fly more than 50 nautical miles from your home airport. This generally eliminates the possibility of cross-country flights.

Private Pilot License (PPL)

Private Pilot License (PPL) is a type of pilot’s license. PPL is the best choice for those looking to build careers in aviation or fly long distances. To fly just about anywhere within the United States, a PPL is required. You can also fly outside the USA. However,  you should meet the requirements of any foreign country you’re visiting. This license allows you to fly without a member limitation. You can also fly up to 18,000 feet high.

Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is an ideal pilot’s license for those aiming to build careers in aviation. The main difference between a commercial pilot (CPL) license and all other types of pilots’ licenses is that it allows a pilot to fly for financial gain.

Getting a CPL is the first step when you are becoming a pilot. You can work for major airlines or even fly for others as part of your own business by getting a CPL. To obtain a CPL, a pilot must have 200 total hours of flight time, with 100 of those as the command pilot, as per the 43 Flight School reports. Before you can fly commercially, you will attend a certified commercial pilot training school.

How to Choose the Right License?

With so many options available, choosing the right pilot’s license can be challenging. Do you want to fly with a SPL, or do you have a dream of becoming a pilot of a commercial plane?

Choose based on your goal

First of all, you should consider your goals. Evaluate how often you think you’ll put your license to use – how often will you fly? For example, if you want to transport others at times or plan on flying friends or family, a private pilot’s license could be a perfect choice. You can consider choosing a SPL because it requires only 20 hours of flight time.

Think about aircraft and passenger needs

After that, consider thinking about how much flexibility you want to have as a pilot. Sport Pilot License (SPL) has fewer flight hours (typically around 20 hours) and can use a valid driver’s license instead of an FAA medical certificate. But it means only you and one other person can fly together at a time. Private Pilot License (PPL) offers more freedom compared to the SPL. For example, you could fly your business client to a meeting one day and fly them back home the next. Or you could fly to a vacation place located just about anywhere in the world. A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) offers you flexible perks, but it takes longer to earn and costs more money to train for.

The Cost of a Pilot’s License

Most of us understand that getting a pilot’s license is more challenging than ever. While this process is not as easy a task as we think, it is quite affordable. To get a pilot’s license, you don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars or have your own plane – you can learn and become certified for as little as $6,000! However, the cost of a pilot’s license depends on which license you’d like to earn.

The SPL has fewer expenses and requirements, but it allows you and one other person to fly together at a time. A PPL allows you to build a career in aviation or fly long distances.

How to Get Started?

To get started, you will be required to do your own research to decide which type of license could be right for you. Getting a pilot’s license is easy, but it is essential to understand all aspects of it, like looking for the best flight schools or instructors in your area and being aware of the latest research. Always consider searching for the best provider for a pilot’s license. Without understanding your goal, you don’t need to get started your journey as a pilot.
